You are what you do.

What is it that defines us? That makes us who we are? Some might think this is too deep a question to ask on a fitness blog, but I disagree. It’s a simple question that has a definite answer, whether we like the answer or not is a different matter.
There are some eternal truths that will remain true whether you belief it or not. In other words, these truths do not need man to believe in them to make it true.  As life truths go, there is none bigger in my opinion than: “you are what you do” (or don’t do for that matter).
For example- if I was to say that I am a generous person but never give to charity, or never spend time giving of myself to people and only look out for No.1, I will in fact be a selfish person.  Saying it means nothing. Action speaks louder than words.
Similarly we can look at all aspects of life and by looking at what we do, our actions, we will know who we are. All with me so far? I hope so because the “rub “is coming next.
Health and fitness is who you are not what you do. There I said it. It’s a truth that you cannot get away from.  It’s my belief that this is the key to change your life for the better. Without health you can do nothing, and therefore you are nothing.
Now don’t be mistaking in thinking that with the words Health and Fitness, I mean the Arnold Swachnegger or Usain Bolt type. No, with health I mean, free of illness (in all its forms) and with fitness I mean being able to manipulate your body effectively.
For example who is the healthiest and fittest: an eighty year old with no ailments and walking without a walking stick or an over exercised athlete with multiple stress fractures and a constant battle with flue (two of the most common causes of athletes pulling out of competition)?
Once you understand this concept, that you are what you do, you can apply it to your daily life with little effort and start making the right healthy choices.
You can control the sugar, smoking, coffee and medication addiction. You have to realise that health and wellness is not a 6 week pre summer – get –in –your- swimsuit diet plan but rather a journey to understanding that what I eat today will have an impact on my body tomorrow, and next week and next year.
Once you understand this , the pressure to perform miracles is gone and in its place a feeling that you can change your life, health and fitness , one day at a time.  Health by 1000 cuts!
